Most "best Discord bots" lists are 30 bots long and tell you nothing about the choice you actually face: which bot runs the core of your server. That choice usually comes down to five names: MEE6, Carl-bot, Dyno, Sapphire and, if you're reading this blog, MurFFy.
A quick disclosure: we build MurFFy. We tried to write the list we would want to read ourselves, so every bot gets its strengths, and MurFFy gets its gaps. - Best for reaction roles and automation: Carl-bot.

- Best-known name: MEE6. Many of its modules now need Premium.

- Music: MurFFy has none. If music matters, a dedicated music bot is usually the best pick.

We looked at what most servers set up in their first month:
- Welcome messages and a starter role.
- Self roles (reaction roles or buttons).
- Moderation: manual commands and automatic filters.
- Tickets for private support.
- Engagement: levels, role rewards, an economy.
- Growth: invite tracking and counters.
- The paywall: what's free and what needs Premium.
- The setup: a web dashboard versus commands only.
We didn't score bots with points. A points table hides the only question that matters: does the free plan cover what your server needs?
MurFFy: the free all-in-one with a dashboard
MurFFy is a newer bot built around one idea: everything a community server needs, configured in one web dashboard, with the core modules on the free plan.
What it does well
- Leveling with custom XP rates, cooldowns, role rewards, multipliers, a rank card editor and a public leaderboard, all free. See the leveling guide.

Where it falls short
- No music. If music is central to your server, add a separate music bot.
- Message automod is still growing. JoinGuard, a honeypot channel and forum moderation exist, but spam and link filters for messages are marked coming soon. Until then, pair MurFFy with Discord's built-in AutoMod.
- Younger and smaller than MEE6, Dyno or Carl-bot, so there are fewer community tutorials out there.

MEE6: the best-known name, with a big paywall
MEE6 is the bot most people have heard of, mostly thanks to its leveling system and leaderboards. It is polished and easy to start with.
The catch is the free plan. According to MEE6's own Free vs Premium comparison (checked September 2026), modules such as reaction roles, the economy, level role rewards, custom XP rates, welcome card images and ticket transcripts need Premium. Premium is billed per server, so running several servers adds up.

Carl-bot: the reaction role specialist
Carl-bot has earned its reputation for reaction roles: many modes, huge limits, and flexible tags (custom commands) with real scripting. Its logging and automod are also solid, and a lot of it is free.
What it doesn't try to be is an engagement bot. There is no built-in leveling, economy or ticket system, so servers that want those end up adding more bots.
Pick Carl-bot if you want powerful role menus and custom commands. Look elsewhere if you want levels, tickets and an economy in the same dashboard. Read Carl-bot vs MurFFy.
Dyno: the moderation veteran
Dyno has protected servers for years. Its strengths are automod, moderation commands, custom commands and announcements, and most of that works on the free plan. Premium adds extras and higher limits.
Dyno is moderation-first. If engagement features like a full economy or detailed leveling matter to you, check its docs first, because that's not where it focuses.

Sapphire: generous and deeply customizable
Sapphire is known for putting almost everything on its free plan. It covers moderation with automod, logging, self roles with buttons or dropdowns, welcome messages and social notifications, and nearly every message it sends can be customized.
It's one of the best free choices for moderation-heavy servers. Check its documentation if you need tickets, an economy or invite tracking.

One bot or several?
Every bot you add needs permissions, has its own role in the hierarchy and can clash with the others (two bots giving join roles, two welcome messages). Fewer bots mean:
- fewer high permissions to protect,
- one place to change settings,
- no duplicate messages or conflicting role assignments.
A sensible setup for most community servers in 2026: one all-in-one bot for the core (welcome, roles, tickets, levels), Discord AutoMod for message filtering, and specialist bots only where you need depth, such as music.

FAQ
What is the best free Discord bot?
It depends on what "free" has to cover. For an all-in-one setup with levels, role rewards, tickets and an economy on the free plan, MurFFy. For free moderation, Sapphire or Dyno. For free reaction roles, Carl-bot.
Is MEE6 still free?
MEE6 has a free plan, but according to its own comparison page many popular modules, including reaction roles, the economy and level role rewards, need Premium.
Can I switch bots without losing member levels?
Levels live in each bot's database, so they don't transfer automatically. In MurFFy you can set levels by hand with /xp set-level for your most active members.
Can I use several bots at once?
Yes, but avoid overlap. Give each bot a clear job and turn off duplicate modules, such as two welcome messages.
